Invest $4m in the Expanded Learning Opportunities Initiative
During the 2017 legislative session, SOWA's priority has been to build on the work we've done over the last year on the Expanded Learning Opportunities Initiative. With support from the state government, we've worked with 50 youth-serving programs in four counties to improve the quality of their work with the children and youth they serve. However, this important work was only funded for one year.
A $4M state investment in the Expanded Learning Opportunities Initiative will leverage private sector investments to reach more youth, helping them build the social-emotional and academic skills they need to succeed in school and in life.
This investment will allow:
- Expansion from 50 programs serving ~2,000 youth to 260 programs serving ~10,400 youth.
- Expansion from four counties to six.
- More diverse populations to be served, including English language learners.
- Creating increased supports such as coaching, training, and technical assistance based on the unique needs of each program.
During the 2017 regular session, which ended on April 23rd, this important investment was included in the House budget – help us to ensure that this funding is included as we enter an expected series of special sessions!.
