Youth Sworn in as Part of Civics Learning Initiative

On January 23rd, SOWA’s Policy and Advocacy Director David Beard with Jan Kline from the 4H Know your Government program presented at the kick-off summit in Olympia for an exciting new Civics Learning Initiative (CLI).
CLI is backed by the Council on Public Legal Education and aims to provide meaningful opportunities for youth to become active, informed, and engaged in our democracy. The summit was attended by Governor Jay Inslee and included a swearing in ceremony of President-elect Echo Vance and President-elect Enaaya Mahmood, who were sworn in by Washington State Supreme Court Chief Justice Mary Fairhurst. Presidents Vance and Mahmood were elected by their fifth grade peers as part of the Storypath civics learning program.
CLI hopes to help youth become engaged adults by providing all Washington youth with high-quality civics education both during the school day and through expanded learning opportunities. The initiative will work to foster collaboration between in-school and out-of-school providers, promote equity by prioritizing civics education for youth of color, immigrants and refugees, and youth in rural areas; and establish local partnerships and raise public awareness. In October of 2017 United States Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor will join a second summit aimed at identifying best practices for high-quality civics education!
