Supporters of Education Funding Rallied in Olympia Last Week
by Stephanie Lennon | | Posted under
Almost 1,000 people including SOWA staff, partners, and family members rallied in Olympia on President's Day at the 2017 Equity Rally. Spearheaded by the Equity in Education Coalition, the rally made it loud and clear that organizations and citizens statewide support fully funding education while also ensuring that other critical state services are not cut.
The rally took place on the steps of the Legislative Building in Olympia, with speakers including State Superintendent Chris Reykdal, State Representatives Lillian Ortiz-Self and Sharon Tomiko-Santos, representatives from the EEC and OneAmerica, and community members. Attendees linked arms in a show of solidarity, stretching from the Capitol Building to the Temple of Justice. After the rally SOWA staff, partners, and even their children enjoyed lunch together and met with their elected officials to discuss the importance of ensuring high-quality expanded learning opportunities are included in their work this legislative session.
Thank you to all who came out and braved the rainy skies to show that we stand united in support of education and critical services!
