Meet Emanuel da Silva

SOWA is excited to welcome Emanuel da Silva to our team for the next 6 months.  He is our Master’s in Social Work practicum student and will be supporting our policy/advocacy, racial equity work and training.  Learn a little more about Emanuel and join us in welcoming him to our team!

Emanuel HeadshotWhere are you from?

I feel like I either give too much info or I’m not being completely honest when answering this question.  I grew up in St. Louis.  However, I was born in Namibia as a refugee.  At the time my family was escaping a civil war in Angola, a former Portuguese colony, which is why I know the tiniest amount of Portuguese.  We moved to the states when I was 6 years old.  However, I’ve lived in Seattle for over 5 years.

What do you like to do on your own time?

I enjoy spending time with good friends, playing soccer, and finding/listening to new music.  I’m an introvert so I value chill time punctuated with a little excitement here and there.

What brought you to SOWA?

I am a student at the University of Washington School of Social Work, and I am glad to have been placed here at SOWA to do my first year internship.  I had been working in various positions at Downtown Emergency Service Center (DESC) which is an amazing agency, but felt the need to have an effect on a systems level.  My interest in becoming an MSW was predicated on the hope of participating on the policy, advocacy, and the intermediary work that SOWA is a big part of.  This feels like a great community of people and I am excited to learn as much as I can from this experience.

Tell us one thing that you are proud of?

I’m proud that I’m able to tap dance.  Although I wish I was much better.
