Make Summer a Success for Rural Kids
by School's Out Washington | | Posted under
School’s Out Washington’s Feed Your Brain grant program has been changing the summer learning equation in rural Washington since 2001.
Children in remote, low-income communities often have less access to summer enrichment activities that many of us take for granted, everything from travel and museums to books and exploring the outdoors. When kids are left home with little or nothing to do, they risk experiencing summer learning loss, forgetting what they learned in school instead of using and practicing it.
Moreover, of the 350,000 children in Washington who depend on free/reduced price meals during the school year, less than 15% are able to access free summer meals due to distance and transportation barriers.
For over 15 successful years, Feed Your Brain has supported 193 combined summer literacy and free meal programs in more than 50 rural communities across Washington, serving more than 21,000 children and 400,000 meals – work made possible by the generous support of our donors.
Feed Your Brain:
- Provides programs with access to books and staff training so they can offer kids a high-quality, literacy-focused summer program.
- Connects programs to federally-subsidized summer meals giving children in high-poverty areas access to nutritious meals they might never have.
We know the Feed Your Brain model works. With access to books, nutritious food, and well-trained program staff who care about their future, more than 95% of the children who have participated in Feed Your Brain-funded programs have either maintained or improved their reading skill level over the course of the summer.
Don’t let this time-tested program go away! We need your support to keep Feed Your Brain going strong and reach our goal of $10,000 to expand our reach in 2016.
If you donate now through our secure form, 100% of your donation will go directly to support a summer literacy program and meal site in one of Washington’s most isolated communities.
This is your chance to provide summer memories and summer success to children across this beautiful state of ours. Don’t wait!
