Legislation to Support Summer Learning & Expanded Learning Opportunities in WA State
by School's Out Washington | | Posted under
The 2014 legislative session is fully underway. As a short session, the 60 days in Olympia move fast! Good news – Legislation has been introduced to support summer learning and expanded learning opportunities. Over the coming weeks, we will be tracking the legislation below, along with other bills that impact the afterschool and youth development field and calling upon folks in the field to help support and share how these programs make a difference in communities.
HB 2317/SB6336: Sponsored by Representative Haigh and its Senate companion bill sponsored by Senator Dammeier.
This legislation would provide competitive summer learning grants to partnerships between schools and community based organizations to design and deliver innovative, enrichment programs to prevent summer learning loss among target student populations. The legislation would also provide capacity to support an expanded learning opportunities system for the state to ensure delivery of high-quality services and to support implementation of the grant program.
SB 6209: Sponsored by Senator Dammeier.
