On Monday, February 3rd, School’s Out Washington (SOWA) participated at the annual Have a Heart for Kids Day in Olympia. At our State’s Capitol, we advocated for Expanded Learning Opportunities as a way to address the achievement gap and summer learning loss.
SOWA has a few bills that are designed to close the achievement gap and reduce summer learning loss, but HB 2317/SB 6336 (promoting expanded learning opportunities as a strategy to close the educational opportunity gap and prevent summer learning loss), SB 6209 (concerning expanded learning opportunities), and SB 6163 (Creating the summer knowledge improvement pilot program) are all still stuck in committee waiting to be voted out.
At our morning session before rallying with other Have a Heart for Kids Day participants we wrote letters to key representatives asking that these quality tested and cost effective bills be moved out of committee before the deadline at the end of this week. After a spirited rally and march around the Capitol Building led by the Lincoln High School marching band, the letters were hand delivered to crucial representatives in the House and Senate Education Committees.
We still need your support! Contact House and Senate Education Committee members, and ask them to move these bills out of committee. Together we will make a difference with sensible legislation that reduces summer learning loss and closes the achievement gap.
Check out SOWA’s State Advocacy webpage for more info on our legislative priorities this session.
