Attendance Awareness Month

by School's Out Washington | | Posted under Afterschool and Summer News

Did you know that September is Attendance Awareness Month?  Our national partners, The Afterschool Alliance, have joined an exciting and innovative partnership working to recognize September as Attendance Awareness Month in communities throughout the nation. The goals of the Attendance Campaign are to increase public understanding of the important role that regular attendance plays in student achievement; articulate the need for policy changes in this arena; and actively involve schools and community organizations in reducing chronic absenteeism.

As the Afterschool Alliance explains in a recent blog post: Afterschool programs can play a huge role in improving school attendance. Studies have shown that students participating in high-quality afterschool programs go to school more, behave better, receive better grades and do better on tests compared to non-participating students. Teens who don’t participate in afterschool programs are nearly three times more likely to skip classes and experiment with drugs and alcohol than teens who do participate in afterschool programs.
